Hurricane Season is Upon Us!
Victory Nissan is a proud supporter of the American Red Cross, and because of our extensive relations we want to make sure you understand how to protect your family in the event of a hurricane.
A hurricane is typically defined as a large tropical storm with winds in excess of 74 miles per hour accompanied by large areas of rainfall. When viewed on a weather radar, a hurricane appears as a cyclone (in meteorological terms - a violent rotating windstorm), which in the Northern Hemisphere has a counterclockwise rotation close to the surface of the earth.
And though we’ve been spared in the past couple of years, meteorologists are predicting Hampton Roads to being a prime candidate for a hurricane(s) this season. Also, reviewing your current insurance policy will prove valuable in the event of property damage or worse…injury or loss of life.
In the event that it is not necessary to evacuate, preparations still should be made such as (1)storing supplies, (2) securing your home against extreme winds and rain, and (3) making plans with others prior to the storm's landfall. Following is a breakdown of these three areas:
1. Supplies: water, non-perishable foods, first-aid kit, prescription medications in sealed containers, waterproof battery-powered or hand-crank-powered flashlights and radios, a whistle or other sound-signaling device, a multi-tool with a knife, identification, medical cards along with any necessary medical records and important documents.
There should be enough supplies to maintain your family for a minimum of three days. Historically in the more catastrophic of weather events the latest response has been approximately 3 days, so preparation for that event would be most beneficial to you and your family.
2. Securing your home against extreme winds: Prior to the storm, take a walk-around your property. Look for tools or equipment that has been left out in the yard – these are instruments of construction and beautification during the work season but in a hurricane these can become instruments of destruction to your and others homes if not secured properly. Look for any trees or big branches on your property that seem unstable – if found see if there is some way to secure them or remove – does no good to have prepared with supplies and things in the home if a wayward tree or big branch from a tree decimates your home as these too become instruments of destruction in a hurricane.
3. Making plans with others prior to the storm's landfall: Ensure that other family members as well as friends and neighbors are aware of your plans as well as you being aware of their plans. Lessons learned from past hurricanes indicate that the more aware we are of each others plans then the quicker the emergency response is in the event of a catastrophe.
